Travel guide to… Windermere

Windermere is a great base to explore the Lake District, but it also is a buzzing tourist village with lots going on.

Where to eat and drink

Homeground is one of the most popular cafes in the Lake District and for good reason. The food is indulgent with superb cakes and great coffee. There is a breakfast and lunch menu but you've got to get there early or be prepared to queue for a table. The Smith is a cosy pub and pizzeria located near the Tourist Information that's great for a glass of wine and a bite to eat.

Where to sleep

Southview Vegetarian Guest House has modern and bright rooms with an indoor pool for guests to use. There is a lovely rooftop terrace which is perfect for a sunset drink.

Where to shop

The Corner Shop is a lovely shop selling local gifts and treats, and you can even spot some of our Cardtoons products in there too! Thuline Studio is a great art gallery located on Main Road that sells paintings by local artist Thuline. She specialises in Highland Cows and even does painting workshops.

What to do

Windermere is a great base to access all the outdoor activities the Lake District has to offer. A great walk from the village centre is up to Orrest Head viewpoint which starts across the road from the Tourist Information. Lake Windermere is easily accessed by either walking or driving down to Millerground car park.
